Infection of the pleura can sometimes lead to excessive fluid or air from the pleural cavity. A chest tube / drain kit is used to eliminate the backlog in the body and promote healing. A drain kit consists of a long tube (chest tube, also known as a tube thoracostomy.) Tube is usually made of a flexible plastic type. The tube is inserted through the skin by a surgical procedure called a thoracotomy. The end of the tube rests inside the pleural cavity. A probe and / or sometimes the camera is inserted into the tube during the surgery to make sure the tube is positioned properly so that drainage is effective.
The tube is then sutured to the skin surface surrounding the tube to keep moving. The whole area is covered with a sterile bandage to protect the wound against infection.
The kit also contains a drain bottle empty. The other end tube is inserted into the chest of the empty bottle. This bottle is used to vacuum, vacuum and "suck" the excess fluid. The content of the bottle are then disposed of as medical waste.
