Is it nessisary to have a demo reel when you are a beginner actor when sending in a audition for a movie?
I am thinking of acting and Ive c=just starte classes and ive found out how to make a resume for a beginner but is it completely nessisary to have a demo reel when you haven’t been in any commercials or films?
I have had auditions without the experience of having a demo reel. One I got for a commercial, all the other 30 or so I went for I either had screen tests or nothing else came from them. I am now with a different agency.
So you don’t have to have a demo reel. “Technically” in America a demo reel is a collection of professional work you have done – though for agents in Australia doing two contrasting monologues for the camera is enough for them to go by, as they can see how you come up on cam.
I would certainly recommend getting yourself a camera and playing around with it before going for professional auditions. I didn’t do that, though looking back on it, probably would have benefited me a lot if I did.
I’m not sure what background you come from, theatre or if you’re a newbie, though acting for the camera is quite a skill to get your head around. One of the trickiest parts, though most often requested when you go for an audition is simply looking down the camera and introducing yourself. I’m going to post a couple of workshop tutorials on Youtube shortly in relation to working with a camera so keep an eye out on my profile.
Till then, you are you, you’re going to do whatever you want anyway. My recommendation is put a basic demo reel together, introducing yourself for the camera, two contrasting monologues and anything else of interest – as it really does help when applying for agencies and bagging professional auditions.
